Workshop-Building Affirming Spaces for LGBTQ Youth (National Afterschool Association Convention)

This workshop serves as a baseline training for out-of-school time staff working with LGBTQ youth.  Sexual minority youth overwhelmingly report that staff and administration are not trained on the LGBTQ youth experience and as a result lack the knowledge needed to support this group of young people.  In a brief lecture and discussion, this workshop will help learners examine the social ecologies of LGBTQ youth and highlight the unique needs of this group of young people based on their environments.  Learners will then work in small groups to identify key opportunities for organizations and staff to build affirming spaces for LGBTQ youth through policies, curriculum, and ongoing staff training.  Learners will discuss their existing policies and curriculum, and utilize best practices and recommendations to develop potential actions plans.  The workshop will provide learners with key resources they can take back and immediately utilize with their organizations to begin building these affirming environments.

Workshop Objectives:
The learners will:
1. Examine the social ecologies of LGBTQ youth in out-of-school time programs.
2. Discuss key actions organizations can take to create welcoming experiences for LGBTQ youth.
3. Relate widely used school-based recommendations for LGBTQ youth safety to out-of-school time and positive youth development standards.
